Don't use hairspray. Use gentleman's relish.
Buy styling products that are specifically designed for curly hair (heat protection spray, curling creme) as they are made to withold natural curls without friziness, so even if you have straight hair it will work in the same way. Also make sure you use an Extra Hold hairspray and perhaps even carry a travel sized can just for touch ups during the day.

I don't know that it makes that much of a difference what you curl your hair with as long as you cool the curl before releasing it out of its shape. Obviously its going to be a lot more difficult to curl one's hair with a straightener, but whenever you style hair with heat, cooling it before letting it relax always makes it keep it's shape better. try making curls and putting them up with bobby pins until they are cool. once they are cool, take them out of the bobby pins and lightly hair spray. they should hold better that way.
